On a windy beach of Hanalei, gazing out across the bay
In a bandana of hibiscus and orchids, her loneliness ended.
She saw him stare but did not seem to mind, smiling through pineapple rind.
It was her way of saying “aloha”, and so they befriended.
And she said to him she wasn’t really good with goodbyes,
"But if you only live for now you may be surprised."
So he breathes the moment in and readies his eyes
To say “aloha” to the girl who isn’t good with goodbyes.
Searching all the way back to her door for what say to see her more
When she took off her bandana and there wasn’t any hair on her head.
She said the cancer was incurable, the treatments simply unendurable,
So she moved to the islands. In a year she’d most likely be dead.
And he said to her he wasn’t really good with goodbyes,
